At least 14 people, including students, teachers, and invigilators, have been arrested across the country for their alleged involvement in examination malpractice during the ongoing West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE).
The cases were recorded at Yeji Senior High School, Abbott College at Asante Bekwai, Atwima Kwanwoma Presbyterian SHS, and several other examination centres nationwide.
Head of Public Affairs at the West African Examinations Council (WAEC), John Kapi, confirmed the arrests at a media briefing. He noted that the number is still increasing and warned that results from all affected schools will undergo strict scrutiny.
One of the major incidents occurred at the Adventist Day Senior High School centre in Kumasi, where multiple mobile phones were confiscated from candidates. The centre was subsequently closed, and the candidates were relocated to the WAEC regional office to continue writing their papers.
Mr. Kapi also highlighted several other cases, including two impersonators arrested at Kasoa who have already been sentenced to six months in prison each, while their accomplice was handed an eight-month jail term. At Kukurantumi, the proprietor of Christian School and a teacher were picked up for allegedly creating a WhatsApp group to circulate exam questions.
