The Let Truth Be Told Alliance (LTBTA) has issued a searing condemnation of illegal mining following the August 6 helicopter crash that killed eight officials, including two ministers.
In a statement titled “Galamsey: A Cruel Menace,” the group linked the tragedy directly to Ghana’s struggle against destructive illegal mining, noting the victims were en route to an anti-galamsey event in Obuasi.
“Their lives were cut short by the very scourge they sought to eradicate,” the statement declared, calling the crash a “damning indictment” of galamsey’s environmental and human toll. The group drew parallels to the 2017 murder of Major Maxwell Mahama, also tied to illegal mining operations, demanding a state of emergency against the practice.
LTBTA proposed a six-point action plan: intensified military-led crackdowns, life sentences for mining kingpins, citizen whistleblowing with protections, forced environmental restoration by convicted financiers, empowerment of traditional rulers, and deployment of surveillance tech and undercover agents. “Galamsey is national sabotage,” they asserted. “Crush it with the full force of law.”
The statement framed the ministers’ deaths as a call to arms: “Their mission must become our mission.” While investigators probe the crash’s exact cause, the group insists deforested, unstable terrains from illegal mining create inherently hazardous conditions.
