The Attorney General, Dr. Dominic Ayine, has firmly rejected criticisms from the Bar Council of England and Wales (BCEW) and the Commonwealth Lawyers Association (CLA) regarding the suspension of Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo.

The government insists that the suspension is valid, constitutional, and will remain in effect.

In a detailed response issued on August 14, 2025, Dr. Ayine stated that the two foreign bodies acted without a basic understanding of Ghana’s laws and the facts of the case.

He highlighted that the process to suspend the Chief Justice was initiated in strict compliance with Article 146 of Ghana’s 1992 Constitution.

Below is the full response.
