The Ministry of Food and Agriculture (MoFA) has pledged its support to Qatari manufacturing firm Al Jedad Holdings Limited and Glofert to establish a fertilizer factory in Ghana.

The plant, which will specialize in fertilizer production, is expected to strengthen the agricultural value chain, provide a sustainable solution to exchange rate volatility, and position Ghana as a fertilizer exporter to other countries.

Minister of Food and Agriculture, Eric Opoku, said the venture will also create a ready local market for fertilizer use, reducing the country’s reliance on imports.

According to him, “we import a lot and so the president has directed that we focus on production of some of the things that we can do here in Ghana. It is only through that, that we can sustainably work on the volatility of the exchange rates.”

He stressed that,” this government is ever ready to support and ensure that the factory is established here. Once you start production here, you have the market already and the Ministry of Food and Agriculture is ever prepared to work with you.”

Local partner of Al Jedad Holdings Limited and founder of Granum Agro Limited, Foster Mawuli Benson, confirmed that funding for the project has already been secured. He expressed optimism that the initiative will give rise to related industries and significantly boost Ghana’s economy.

“I know in the past Ghana has been pursuing this opportunity to manufacture fertilizers. So basically what we’re going to produce in Ghana at the Petroleum Hub at Atuabo is urea and ammonia and this obviously is going to generate over 2,000 direct employment for the Ghanaian youth,” he stated.

He added that, “apart from that there are other value chain industries that are going to spring up.”

Construction of the factory is scheduled to begin in October 2025, with completion expected within 32 months.
