Just three days before what would have been their 29th wedding anniversary, the Smack That hitmaker’s wife filed for divorce, citing irreconcilable differences as the reason for their split, according to court documents obtained by Billboard on Sept. 12.
Per the outlet, Tomeka is requesting joint legal custody but sole physical custody of their 17-year-old daughter, Journey. She is also seeking spousal support from the 52-year-old singer, whose legal name is Aliaune Badara Thiam, while asking the court to block any possibility of Akon receiving spousal support.
According to the renowned media network, E! News, they noted that they reached out to representatives for both Akon and Tomeka but have yet to receive a response.
The divorce offers a rare glimpse into Akon’s personal life, which has long been surrounded by speculation. For years, rumours have circulated that the Grammy-nominated artist is a polygamist with multiple wives—a talk he has never fully denied.
“I’mma let it stay a rumour,” Akon told VladTV in 2022. “I like the fact that people are guessing now, I love it. I’m not confirming nor denying. You go online, you may see nine, you might see seven, you might see four. I love it, though.”
What Akon has confirmed, however, is his role as a father. He has acknowledged having seven boys and two daughters, a detail reflected in the divorce filing, which confirms he is a father of nine.
The “Lonely” crooner has often compared his blended family experience to that of Nick Cannon, who has 12 children with six different women, noting that fatherhood remains one of the most important aspects of his life.
