Armwrestling: Central Region to become Ghana’s hub – Abass Sulley

Chairman of the newly constituted Central Regional Armwrestling Association, Mr Abass Sulley, has said the region is on the verge of becoming Ghana’s armwrestling hub.
Mr Sulley made the statement when the reconstituted leadership of the association paid a courtesy call on the Regional Sports Director, Ms Joyce Batsa, to familiarise themselves and discuss development collaboration with the National Sports Authority (NSA).
He expressed confidence in the region’s potential to produce talented armwrestlers capable of competing on the international stage. He cited the region’s strategic location, rich pool of sporting talent, and the association’s commitment to developing and promoting the sport.
Mr Sulley indicated that the association’s development focus would be on Junior and Senior High Schools, where armwrestling will be introduced as a competitive sport. The initiative aims to identify and nurture young talent, providing opportunities for students to develop their skills and compete at higher levels.
President of the Ghana Armwrestling Federation, Charles Osei Asibey, echoed Mr Sulley’s sentiments, saying:
“The Central Region is noted for sports and academics. The abundance of schools and the competitive spirit of student-athletes will make the region a natural attraction and soon create wealth out of the passion and excitement of our sport.”
Ms Joyce Batsa commended the Ghana Armwrestling Federation for its efforts in promoting the sport nationwide and pledged her support for its development in the Central Region. She emphasised the importance of commitment, teamwork, and collaboration between the association, sports authorities, and other stakeholders to achieve lasting results.
The mandate of the new leadership is to develop and promote armwrestling in Senior and Junior High Schools, establish clubs, and raise a strong regional team to feed into the national side. The initiative will not only promote the sport but also provide a platform for young athletes to showcase their skills and potentially represent Ghana internationally.
The Central Region is expected to take centre stage in Ghana’s armwrestling development, as inter-school rivalries at the Senior High School level are anticipated to give the sport the traction it needs to become a national hub.
The new regional leadership will be formally inaugurated in the coming days as the region prepares to host a “Training of Trainers” programme.
