In recent times, several musicians have said in interviews that they are not motivated by awards but by passion and impact. However, reggae-dancehall artist Ras Kuuku believes these claims are not true.

Speaking in an exclusive interview on Hitz FM’s Daybreak Hitz, the award-winning musician argued that it is misleading for artists to act like recognition doesn’t matter. He explained that every musician wants to be acknowledged for their work, and industry awards are one of the highest forms of validation.

“Any artist who says they don’t do music for awards is lying. Awards bring joy and make fans proud. It’s a recognition of your hard work. When you win, it shows that the music you created has paid off. If you don’t win, then maybe what you put in didn’t yield results.”

Using an agricultural analogy, Ras Kuuku compared making music to planting seeds and explained that receiving an award means that the creative effort has thrived. He also stated that awards not only serve as recognition but also help set artists apart from their peers while motivating them to better their craft.

“Those who say they don’t want awards are often the same ones who enjoy comparisons. Awards differentiate you. If you’re an artist, whether legendary or not, and you’ve never won a TGMA, then there’s something off,” he said.

The ‘Me Mpaebo” hitmaker further revealed that while some musicians publicly downplay the importance of awards, many feel disappointed when their work goes unrecognized. He added that some artists even “cry in secret” when they don’t win, highlighting how much musicians value recognition.

Proud of his own achievements, Ras  stressed that winning awards gives him a sense of fulfillment and validates his efforts as a musician. In conclusion, he encouraged the music industry to appreciate platforms such as the Telecel Ghana Music Awards (TGMA), which he feels motivate artists and strengthen their connection with fans.
