A group of assailants has attacked a community in Kongo, a village in the Upper East Region.

They inflicted gun, cutlass and club wounds on the people, leaving in their trail, eight razed compound houses, burnt livestock and other valuable items.

Recounting the tragedy to the Ghana News Agency, Mr Sulemana Abdulai, an elder of the community and a brother of one of the victims, said on August 2nd, the group stormed the area, shooting and threatening them without any provocation.

He has appealed to the government to apply all necessary interventions to deter further attacks on the community because they were Ghanaians just like all other ethnic groups in the area.

Kongo is a community in Tempani District of the Upper East Region. It is border village at a crossroad to Burkina Faso and Togo.

The community is inhabited by three main ethnic groups or tribes, the Bimobas, the Mossi and the Fulbes(Fulani).

I am still soaking the pressure and the blame because I have asked my people not to retaliation, hoping that the police will intervene but we don’t see much.

Some of my people are seriously injured. They were rushed to the hospital. Some, as I speak, have been transferred from Bolga Hospital to Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital, he said.

ASP Kwadwo Adu, the Garu District Commander of the Ghana Police Service, told the GNA that the attack took place and was reported to him by the victims.

He said, “some arrests had been made and investigation was ongoing.”

He assured the community of Police protection and warned against such attacks.

Mr Kakani Fatawu, Assemblyman for Kongo, also told the GNA that the attack took place and it was devastating.

He said the remote cause was a dispute over land use and ownership which was before the Bolgatanga High Court.

He said he had personally engaged the factions and impressed on them to co exist and solve their problems through dialogue and peaceful means.

“We have lived together for many centuries and I wonder where all these misunderstandings and violence are coming from.”

He appealed to the Military and the Police to step up their patrols in the area and disarm people if necessary.

He said the region was experiencing a major conflict already and could not have another one.
