The tragic helicopter crash on Wednesday, 6th August 2025, that took the lives of eight individuals, including two cabinet ministers, has left Ghana in mourning and raised significant concerns about aviation safety.
In the wake of this heart-wrenching event, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, Foreign Minister and the Member of Parliament for North Tongu, said the government has announced plans to enlist experts from the United States to investigate the accident.
While seeking international expertise can provide immediate insights, it also highlights a crucial opportunity for growth within our nation. We can shift from relying on foreign investigators to building our robust capacity for aviation accident investigations.
Instead of bringing in outside experts every time a crisis arises, let’s invest in our future. Ghana can identify and send a team of ten dedicated professionals, five highly qualified military personnel, and five police officers to the United States, or another country renowned for its aviation safety practices, for specialised training. These individuals will return home as certified experts, forming the backbone of a permanent national crash investigation team.
This approach presents two powerful advantages:
Cost-effectiveness – By investing in training, we can save public funds in the long run instead of continuously hiring foreign investigators.
Sovereignty and self-reliance– When Ghanaians lead investigations into crucial national incidents, we gain control over the flow of information and safeguard our security interests.
Let us honour the lives lost in this tragedy by turning it into a pivotal moment for our country. This is a chance for Ghana to commit to enhancing our capabilities and investing in our people. Rather than seeking quick fixes, we can forge a path towards lasting solutions that show foresight and a commitment to our nation.
If we take this step today, future generations will remember this significant decision the moment Ghana chose to stand strong on its own investigative feet, ready and capable. Together, we can build a safer future for all Ghanaians.
