Barbados came alive this week as Carifesta XV welcomed Grammy-nominated Ghanaian reggae star Rocky Dawuni, who described his global journey as a mission to use music as a bridge between Africa and its diaspora.

“For the past two months, I’ve been on the road—Europe, Ethiopia, the United States—and now Barbados,” Dawuni shared. “For me, the music is about connecting with our brothers and sisters in the diaspora. Our music must be relevant as a cultural connection, bringing our people together.”

The Afro Roots pioneer, whose tours have also taken him through Brazil, Costa Rica, Colombia, and Jamaica, emphasized that his performances are rooted in channeling what he calls the “energy of Africa” to audiences worldwide. Appearing at Carifesta alongside regional leaders, including Barbados Prime Minister Mia Mottley, Dawuni reflected on the event as a powerful space for unity.

“This is a crucible for reenacting what the future of Africa should be,” he said. “To bring my music here with the presence of the Prime Minister is an opportunity to fly the flag of Ghana—the black star, the beacon of freedom in Africa—while reminding our brothers and sisters that it’s time to make their way back to the continent.”

Dawuni also called for Africa to strengthen cultural exchange initiatives similar to the legendary FESTAC festivals of the past. “Unification won’t start politically—it will start culturally. Through culture, we create the foundation for political leadership to open the way for true reconnection. Africa can never be powerful unless it is a combination of home and abroad.”

Beyond his message of unity, Dawuni is keeping fans excited with new music. He recently released a collaborative track with Sadella Marley, with more singles on the way and a full album slated for release early next year.

“People should expect the ultimate,” he promised.
