Presidential staffer and journalist Bridget Otoo has shared her thoughts on the ongoing Senior High School (SHS) haircut debate, following recent comments by Education Minister Haruna Iddrisu defending the long-standing policy.

The discussion around the policy was reignited last week after a viral video showed a newly admitted Yaa Asantewaa Girls’ SHS student crying while having her hair cut before starting school. Speaking amid the public debate at the 75th anniversary of Mawuli Senior High School on Saturday, October 25, the minister maintained that long hair would not be tolerated in schools, stressing that “the secondary school environment is not a place for a beauty contest.”

Reacting in a post on X, Bridget Otoo reflected on her own experience, describing the haircut rule as “traumatizing.” “I was forced to cut my hair, and there was a particular teacher who constantly accused me of using activator in my hair when my mum didn’t even have money for food,” she wrote.

Otoo called for a more open-minded approach to student appearance, saying, “I pray we get to a point where good morals aren’t tied to our ponytail or Afro hair.” She also encouraged constructive advocacy on the issue, adding that speaking out can inspire change without resorting to insults.
