China’s Deputy UN Ambassador Geng Shuang forcefully dismissed U.S. allegations that Beijing is “the most important supplier” of Russia’s war effort during a Security Council session on Ukraine.
Geng condemned the claims as “false and slanderous,” insisting China has never provided lethal weapons to either side and strictly controls dual-use exports like drones.
He emphasized that China’s trade with Russia and Ukraine—both unrestricted by UN sanctions—violates no international laws. “China’s legitimate rights must not be infringed,” Geng stated, highlighting U.S. hypocrisy: “If the United States trades with Russia itself, why forbid others?” He warned that U.S. pressure undermines China’s potential mediation role despite Washington’s calls for Beijing to help end the conflict.
Geng expressed alarm over escalating Western weapons shipments to Ukraine, noting increased “lethality and destructive power” that prolongs fighting and risks regional spillover. He urged Moscow and Kyiv to prioritize de-escalation and negotiations toward a “binding peace agreement,” reiterating China’s consistent advocacy for dialogue since the conflict’s outset.
