Mr. Emmanuel Armah-Kofi Buah, Acting Minister for Environment, Science, Technology and Innovation (MESTI), said the inauguration marked a significant milestone in harnessing science, technology and innovation for Ghana’s socio-economic transformation.
He said the Board’s core functions include promoting, encouraging and regulating the application of scientific and technological innovations to enhance national development.
“The board, as the highest governance authority, is tasked with exercise general oversight over the Council to provide strategic direction and ensure the effective and efficient performance of its functions,” he said.
Mr. Buah drew the Board’s attention to the CSIR Act, 1996 (Act 521), which mandates the Council to conduct research for the development and utilisation of natural resources, emphasising the need for research to extend beyond publication and laboratory successes.
He added that members must pursue strategic interventions in critical national programmes such as the Ghana School Feeding Programme.
Mr. Buah urged members to stay abreast of public concerns, enabling them to resolve issues and advise the minister and government effectively.
He also called on the Board to forge partnerships with the private sector, protect intellectual property and support the translation of research into market-ready products and services.
Speaking on behalf of the chair, Prof. Adjei thanked President John Dramani Mahama for appointing the Board and urged members to commit fully to achieving the institution’s goals.
“We are mindful of the onerous responsibility that has been reposed in us and the trust that this function requires, so we say that we will commit to discharge the duties entrusted us to the best of our ability in full humility, mindful of the strategic position that the institution has,” he added.
Prof. Adjei cautioned that failure to perform their duties could have generational consequences for the sustainability of Ghana’s national assets.
