The president should name a school after Lumba
In an exclusive interview with GhanaWeb, Mama Acheampong appealed to the government in a viral video
“He had a sharp, captivating voice that could thrill an audience on the spot. Recognising his talent, I appointed him as the choir prefect, and it was through his influence that the queen mother of Juaben generously funded the purchase of the first choir robes for our school,” Mama Acheampong recounted.
She reminisced about the formation of the Lumba Brothers, a group that showcased Lumba’s artistic prowess, which later expanded to include Theresah Abebrese.
“He was an exceptional singer and songwriter, and Charles was always respectful and intelligent. The children adored him,” she added with palpable affection.
In light of ongoing discussions regarding a statue to honour the late musician, Mama Acheampong expressed her genuine desire for lasting recognition that would benefit future generations.
“While the idea of constructing a sculpture is commendable, history shows that we struggle with maintenance in Ghana. Naming a school or a road after him would be a lasting tribute to the ‘Makro Mo’ singer, something tangible that we can all see and appreciate regularly. Statues tend to fall into disrepair,” she explained.
Daddy Lumba’s teacher names her favourite song
Expressing her connection to Lumba’s music, she stated that “Ankwanoma” is her favourite song from him, recalling a memorable performance where they shared the stage together.
“During the first Legends Night, I took to the stage as a surprise for him without his prior knowledge. After speaking fondly about him, I began to sing ‘Ankwanoma.’ He spontaneously took the mic and completed the song for me; he knew how much I cherished it,” she reflected warmly.
