Ernest Kumi: Akufo-Addo Gets Loud Reception in Akwatia, Sprays Cash at One Week

“If they don’t know, I am still telling them that President Akufo-Addo was one key factor who led to their defeat. So, in going to that funeral and asking him to lead that delegation, it’s a way of telling Ghanaians that we still have not even learnt.”

“He is a retired President. Let him retire, let him rest, let him take it easy, try to look for a candidate who will take over from him, and then don’t bring the ‘politically bad omen’ that he has,” he added.

His comment comes after former President Akufo-Addo led the NPP to the one-week commemoration of the late Akwatia MP, Ernest Yaw Kumi, held at Akyem Wenchi Funeral Grounds in the Eastern Region.

Prof Ransford Gyampo said he expects the party to allow Akufo-Addo to take a behind-the-scenes role while they get a flagbearer whom they will build the party around.

“Stop the internal attacks”: Bawumia files flagbearer nomination forms amid call for unity

“People voted against President Akufo-Addo and not Vice President Bawumia in the 2024 elections. So, I’m expecting the party to do all they can to dissociate themselves a little from them and rebuild themselves and let him be the elderly statesman to help behind the scenes. But to let him lead frontally will hurt them.”

“As someone who wants President Mahama to succeed, I find it difficult to listen to people who call President Akufo-Addo all kinds of bad names and portray him as the worst President. So far, the NDC government under President Mahama has not done anything so special that it can rival Akufo-Addo in terms of development and social interventions. We must be circumspect in how we try to destroy leaders who have played their part in our country. For me, I believe politics should be about who builds more roads than the other, who builds more and better hospitals than the other, who helps in making education affordable and quality. Who is creating job opportunities for the youth? Let’s stop personality attacks on leaders by describing them with very distasteful remarks. Let your achievements speak. By the way, what are Professor Gyampo’s achievements in his current portfolio, given to him by President Mahama?”

“Looks like even the party’s own academics are saying the same thing we’ve been seeing on the ground, dragging Akufo-Addo around like a lucky charm won’t suddenly turn bad luck into votes. Some omens are just too strong to ignore.”
