ECOWAS has concluded a five-day coordination mission to the African Union Commission (AUC) in Addis Ababa, aiming to strengthen implementation of the African Peace and Security Architecture (APSA IV).
From June 30 to July 4, 2025, delegates from the ECOWAS Peace Fund and Directorate of Financial Reporting engaged with AU counterparts, including the African Union Peace Fund (AUPF) and APSA Support Programme teams.
According to the ECOWAS press release, the mission focused on enhancing data-driven security frameworks and institutional synergies. Key discussions centered on optimizing the African Monitoring and Evaluation Reporting Tool (AMERT) to standardize data sharing and evaluation processes across stakeholders. The delegation also benchmarked operational models in fund mobilization, compliance, and digital reporting systems with AU Peace Fund experts.
Technical working sessions explored platform interoperability roadmaps and capacity-building initiatives for digital peacekeeping tools. ECOWAS emphasized these efforts align with broader goals to eliminate barriers to regional integration under its “ECOWAS of the People” 2050 vision.
The visit forms part of ongoing collaboration between the regional bodies following the withdrawal of Burkina Faso, Mali, and Niger from ECOWAS in January 2025. Current initiatives prioritize institutional resilience and data harmonization to address evolving security challenges in West Africa.
