The Acting Chief Executive of the National Petroleum Authority (NPA), Godwin Edudzi Tameklo, has criticised the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP)’s reorganisation efforts to rebuild the party ahead of the 2028 election.

The NPP was dealt a heavy electoral defeat by President John Mahama of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), losing by over a 1.5 million vote gap.

Considering this humiliating defeat, Mr Tameklo, who is also the Director of Legal Affairs for the NDC, said one would expect the NPP to be more strategic, rebuilding their party from the grassroots level through to the top.

However, he said the NPP had rather decided to begin their reorganisation efforts by first electing a flagbearer.

Speaking on TV3’s New Day show on Monday, August 18, 2025, the NPA boss suggested that the NPP may suffer another defeat with the approach they have taken regarding their reorganisation efforts.

“If you have a situation where a political party goes into an election and comes with this outcome, and says that the best strategy for me is to elect the flag bearer, that is the top, before looking for the foundation. Because we all agree that the building block of all our political parties are the branch executives. Then, the constituency executives, then the regional executives, national executives,” he said.

“Now, you have a situation where you’ve gotten the head and you are now going to look for the workmen. How is this backed by social science? How is it backed by social engineering?” he added.

Consequently, as a prominent member of the NDC, Mr Tameklo said he would personally be happy to see the NPP collapse.

However, for the progress of Ghana’s fledgling democracy, Mr Tameklo said he hoped the NPP remained a strong and vibrant political party to put the ruling NDC on its toes.

“I’m interested in having a formidable political party, a political party that would put the NDC on its toes because you see we need that for the sake of Ghana. I would be happy if the NPP collapses. Yes, I will, but is that the best for Ghana? Certainly not. Look at the kind of opposition we gave to the NPP from 2017 to 2024. Solid,” he further stated.
