The EC has announced that nominations are now open, and qualified persons interested in contesting the by-election can download the forms online and submit them at the Commission’s Tamale Metropolitan Office daily between 9:00 am and 12:00 pm, and between 2:00 pm and 5:00 pm.
According to the EC, the filing fee has been set at GH₵10,000.00 per candidate. However, female candidates and Persons with Disabilities (PWDs) will pay GH¢7,500.00.
The Tamale Central parliamentary seat became vacant following the demise of the sitting Member of Parliament (MP), Dr Ibrahim Murtala Mohammed.
While the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) has withdrawn from contesting the election, claiming they want to honour the late MP, the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) is preparing to elect a candidate to represent them.
In the 2024 general elections, the NDC, with Dr Murtala Mohammed as their candidate, won the Tamale Central seat by a margin of over 30,000 votes.
Other victims of the helicopter crash
Dr Ibrahim Murtala Mohammed, the Minister for Environment, Science and Technology, and seven other prominent Ghanaians died in a tragic helicopter crash.
The helicopter was en route to Obuasi when contact was lost shortly after taking off from Accra at 9:12 am.
Aside from Dr Murtala Mohammed, the helicopter crash, which occurred on Wednesday, August 6, 2025, also claimed the lives of Dr Edward Omane Boamah, the Minister for Defence; Deputy National Security Coordinator, Limuna Muniru; former Ashanti Regional Minister, Dr Samuel Sarpong; and former NDC parliamentary candidate for Obuasi East, Samuel Aboagye.

NPP urges NDC to withdraw from Akwatia
Meanwhile, Henry Nana Boakye, the National Organiser of the NPP, popularly known as Nana B, has urged the National Democratic Congress (NDC) to withdraw from the upcoming Akwatia by-election.
His appeal follows the NPP’s decision to pull out of the Tamale Central race in honour of the late Dr Ibrahim Murtala Mohammed.
Nana B believes the NDC making a similar gesture would be a respectful tribute to the late Dr Edward Omane Boamah, a native of the Eastern Region, who died in last Wednesday’s helicopter crash at Adansi Obuasi.
