The Member of Parliament for Akwatia passed away on July 7, 2025, at the age of 40, after a short illness.

According to the late MP’s brother, he returned to Accra from a trip in the early hours of the day and shortly started complaining of chest pains.

He was rushed to the Lister Hospital in Spintex, Tema, where he succumbed to his illness.

It was later confirmed that the first time legislator died of a heart attack.

Ernest Kumi’s death came amid a fierce legal battle to hold onto his seat after he secured victory in the December 2024 parliamentary elections.

According to the MP for Akuapem North, Sammi Awuku, he believed the death was related to stress as the legal challenges related to his win in the 2024 elections had placed an undue toll on his health.

NPP organises Ernest Kumi candlelight vigil

On Thursday, August 28, a candlelight vigil was held for the late MP in Akyem-Wenchi.

The vigil brought together family members and sympathisers of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the constituency, as well as regional and national executives of the party.

NPP executives also announced that the members of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) were barred from the event.

Following the late MP’s death, a one week observation was scheduled for Friday, August 29, at Akyem Wenchi.

Ernest Kumi’s wife, Mavis, showed up at the one week observation in tears over the tragic loss of her husband.

She was observed arriving with an entourage of women to provide her support as she struggled to keep her emotions in check.

The video stirred sadness on social media with many Ghanaians expressing their condolences to Mrs Kumi.
