The Food and Drugs Authority (FDA) has ordered Nutrifoods Ghana Limited to, with immediate effect, suspend the manufacture of Tasty Tomato Mix, citing serious health and safety breaches at the facility’s production.

In a press statement issued on Sunday, August 3, 2025, the FDA said this order comes after an earlier directive for a recall of all canned Tasty Tom Enriched Tomato Mix products, as well as specified batches of the product in 380g and 1.05kg pouches.

Both orders came after several consumers complained about Tasty Tom, which led to an investigation into the company’s production and operation.

In a video on X, an FDA official indicated that Tasty Tom tomato paste produced on July 21, 2025, had been bloated. Others had developed moulds posing a health risk to consumers.

“The Food and Drugs Authority (FDA) has suspended the manufacture of Tasty Tom Enriched Tomato Mix with immediate effect. A market recall of all canned Tasty Tom Enriched Tomato Mix products, and specific batches of the product in pouches (the 380g and 1.05kg pouches) was earlier directed by the FDA.”

“The suspension follows consumer complaints and FDA’s investigation of Nutrifoods Ghana Limited’s manufacturing plant, which established infractions on standards and quality. Maintenance of critical manufacturing equipment was poor, and monitoring systems were inadequate to protect public health and safety.”

The statement added that the lapses at the plant meant for the production of the canned products were compromised during the sealing.

“These breaches present unacceptable risks to public health. We have acted swiftly to suspend production and ensure the affected products are removed from the market.”

The FDA raised concerns about compliance and regulatory enforcement since Nutrifoods had been barred from manufacturing the tomato mix in January 2025.

The Authority has therefore started an internal investigation to find out the lapses in its regulatory oversight.

The statement directed the general public to cooperate and comply with the given directive.

Meanwhile, Nutrifoods has, in a communique, agreed to recall products with the specified batch numbers as directed by the FDA.
