The Food and Drugs Authority (FDA) has issued an urgent warning to the public against consuming Choice Irish Cream Flavoured Drink after laboratory tests revealed that the product had been adulterated with Sildenafil Citrate, a prescription-only medicine commonly used for treating erectile dysfunction in men.
In a press statement issued on Wednesday, November 5, 2025, and signed by the Acting Chief Executive Officer, Prof. Kwabena Frimpong-Manso Opuni, the FDA disclosed that the product, manufactured by 1 Africa Industries Limited, contained the undeclared drug substance, posing serious health risks to consumers.
According to the statement, “Choice Irish Cream Flavoured Drink is registered with the Authority as a food product (an alcoholic drink) and must not contain any drug substance.”
The FDA warned that the presence of Sildenafil in the drink is particularly dangerous as it can “dangerously interact with medications like nitroglycerin, causing a sudden drop in blood pressure that may result in heart attack or stroke.”
Beyond drug interactions, the Authority also cautioned that prolonged use of the adulterated product could lead to “loss of vision or hearing, painful and prolonged erection, and psychological dependence, further endangering consumers’ well-being.”
The FDA has since begun working with the manufacturer, 1 Africa Industries Limited, to recall the product from the market for safe disposal. It further assured the public that “appropriate regulatory actions are being initiated as such adulteration of food products constitutes an offence and is in violation of Section 100 (4) of the Public Health Act, 2012 (Act 851).”

The Authority also urged consumers, retailers, and distributors to comply with the recall directive and report anyone offering the product for sale to the nearest FDA office.
Prof. Frimpong-Manso Opuni reaffirmed the FDA’s commitment to safeguarding public health, stating, “The FDA remains fully committed to protecting public health by ensuring that all regulated products including alcoholic beverages are safe, of good quality, and properly manufactured.”
