FIFA President Gianni Infantino has issued a strong condemnation following racist abuse directed at AFC Bournemouth striker Antoine Semenyo during his team’s Premier League opener at Liverpool’s Anfield stadium.

The Ghanaian international reported the incident to referee Anthony Taylor, leading to a stoppage in play during the first half.

Taylor halted the match in the 28th minute and consulted with both managers, Liverpool’s Arne Slot and Bournemouth’s Andoni Iraola, near the sideline.

Security personnel quickly identified and removed the offending fan from the ground. Infantino described the abuse as “absolutely unacceptable,” praising Semenyo’s courage and performance under adversity as a powerful example for players globally.

Infantino confirmed FIFA’s Players’ Voice Panel, established under the organization’s 2024 anti-racism pillars, will contact Semenyo and monitor the situation.

“We are committed to ensuring players are respected and protected,” Infantino stated, demanding competition organizers and law enforcement take appropriate action. FIFA, the panel, and the wider football community stand firmly with the player, offering support to ensure strong deterrents are implemented to eradicate racism from the sport.

Despite the disturbing incident, Semenyo demonstrated remarkable focus, scoring twice to level the match at 2-2. Liverpool ultimately secured a 4-2 victory with late goals from Federico Chiesa and Mohamed Salah.
