A major fire consumed multiple makeshift structures near Madina Redco Flats on Saturday, August 3, causing significant property damage but no reported injuries.

The blaze erupted around midday, rapidly engulfing wooden and metal shelters used for both housing and small-scale commerce in the vicinity.

Eyewitnesses observed flames spreading to nearby traders’ goods and utility infrastructure as the situation escalated.

The Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) received an emergency call at 12:36 p.m. and dispatched firefighters from Madina Fire Station, who arrived within four minutes.

Additional teams from Legon, Abelempke, and GNFS Headquarters provided reinforcement, deploying five fire engines total to combat the flames.

Firefighters successfully brought the fire under control by 1:56 p.m. after intense efforts to contain its spread through the densely packed structures.

While no casualties occurred, GNFS personnel remain on-site conducting overhaul operations to extinguish residual hot spots and prevent reignition.

Officials have launched a formal investigation to determine the exact cause of the fire that destroyed the informal settlement area. The incident highlights ongoing challenges with unregulated structures in urban zones as authorities assess the full extent of the damage.
