Fire officers moved in swiftly to contain a ravaging fire at a commercial enclave, known as Nogora Junction at Ho Technical University in the Volta Region.
The officers numbering about 20, under the lead of the Ho Municipal Fire Commander, Divisional Officer II Seth Tey brought the fire under control to prevent further damage.
The inferno which started at about 5:30 pm on Wednesday reportedly from the kitchen of an eatery in the enclave, would have caused extensive damage if not for the timely arrival of the fire officers.
“I was cooking here when I saw the fire from the kitchen of the shop where they sell food and we quickly called the Fire Service”, said Adjetey Maxwell popularly known as Chef Max.
He further indicated that close to 6 shops were almost razed down on his side. The shops traded in boutique, food, and beverages among others.
“We were setting up the place and I decided to go home to pick something. I saw a smoke at the back, the shop was burning. Before I could run and get here all my things, tables, chairs, ice chest, and bowls all got burnt. I went for a loan just today”, a shop owner wailed.
National Disaster Management Organization (NADMO) officials at the scene said their preliminary investigations revealed over 10 shops and containers were affected by the fire.
A shop owner who wishes to remain anonymous believes the fire was triggered by an intermittent power supply experienced in the enclave earlier.
“They will turn off the light and turn it on again, this happened a couple of times before I left the shop. In less than 10 minutes, I heard there was a fire outbreak. Oh Lord, I think I am dreaming”, he grieved.
Divisional Officer II, Seth Tey said that it was challenging for them to completely put out the fire which took them close to hours, with the help of two tenders.
“It was very difficult to put out the fire because of the combustibles in the shops but we did our best to put it all out. It took us two hours to complete this task” he narrated.
He could not indicate the course of fire nor ascertain the extent of damage.
