The wife of Flying Officer Manaen Twum-Ampadu, Naval Lt Ewuradwoa Kumi-Kyeremah, fought bitter tears at a vigil held in honour of the fallen airman and his two comrades.

Flying Officer Manaen Twum-Ampadu, Squadron Leader Peter Bafemi Anala, and Sergeant Ernest Addo Mensah all died in a helicopter crash on Wednesday, August 6, 2025.

They were operating a Ghana Armed Forces Z-9 helicopter, flying five high-ranking government officials from Accra to Obuasi to attend a conference on illegal mining.

The helicopter tragically crashed into the Sikaman Forest in the Adansi Afuokrom District of the Ashanti Region, killing all eight people on board.

Aside from the three airmen, the five other fatalities included Defence Minister Dr Edward Omane Boamah and Environment Minister, Murtala Mohammed, Deputy National Security Coordinator Limuna Muniru, former Ashanti Regional Minister Dr Samuel Sarpong, and former Parliamentary Candidate for Obuasi East, Samuel Aboagye.

Twum-Ampadu’s wife weeps at vigil

The tragedy sparked a period of nationwide mourning and frantic preparations to honour the fallen.

A candlelight vigil was organised for the night of Friday, August 8, at the Takoradi Airport, as all three deceased airmen flew out of the Takoradi Air Force base.

Family members, friends, colleagues and loved ones of the fallen soldiers attended the vigil.

During the night, photos of Flying Officer Manaen Twum-Ampadu’s wife, Naval Lt Ewuradwoa Kumi-Kyeremah, showed her completely devastated over the loss of her husband.

According to reports, Kumi-Kyeremeh serves as a psychologist at the 2 Garrison.
