When my school handed me an internship letter to submit to United Bank for Africa Ghana Ltd., I had no idea how transformative the experience would be. Submitting that letter with hope, waiting for a response, and finally receiving the call to begin my internship marked the start of a journey filled with growth, learning, and discovery.

Before joining UBA, I shared a common perception that banks only dealt with money, accounts, and financial transactions. However, my internship experience has completely changed that perspective. I have come to see that banks are complex institutions with diverse departments, each contributing uniquely to the overall success of the organization.

I had the privilege of being placed in the Marketing and Corporate Communications (MCC) department, an especially rewarding placement as a communication student. I assisted in drafting and proofreading communication materials, helped in the preparation of press releases and newsletters. I also participated in organizing events such as the Banks’s 2025 Mid-Year Strategy Review. Additionally, I gained hands-on experience in social media management, media monitoring, and the development of creative content to strengthen UBA’s image.

These roles challenged me to think critically and creatively, and work collaboratively with a professional team. Each task, whether big or small, contributed to my understanding of how communication serves as a strategic tool in banking and beyond.

As the corporate social responsibility arm of the United Bank for Africa, UBA Foundation plays a vital role in driving impact across Africa. Through initiatives in education, environment, empowerment, and special projects, the Foundation is committed to improving lives and giving back to the communities where the bank operates.

During my internship, I had the opportunity to witness one of these initiatives firsthand when the bank donated books to schools including Accra Academy and Presbyterian Boys Senior High School, Legon as part of the Read Africa project. This experience deepened my appreciation for how UBA not only provides financial services but also invests in shaping the future of young Africans through literacy and learning.

Apart from the work experience, my internship also helped me build important soft skills. I learned how to adapt quickly in a busy workplace, work well with others as part of a team, and communicate clearly with colleagues and clients. I also improved my time management and ability to pay attention to details while handling different tasks. These lessons go beyond textbooks and will be useful in any career path I choose to follow.

Looking back, I am deeply grateful for the exposure and confidence this internship has given me. UBA has shown me that banks are not only about money but are ecosystems where diverse skills and disciplines come together to create value. This experience has strengthened my passion for communication and inspired me to pursue it with even greater focus and purpose.
