Ghanaian hip-hop artist Gambo paused his performance during Davido’s “5IVE Tour” stop in Philadelphia to pay tribute to late highlife icon Daddy Lumba, who died July 26 at age 60.
At the near-capacity Liacouras Center on August 2, Gambo held a candlelight vigil honoring Charles Kwadwo Fosu, widely known as Daddy Lumba, acknowledging his profound influence on Ghanaian music.
The gesture highlighted cross-generational respect within Africa’s music scene as Gambo, a 2022 Telecel Ghana Music Awards “Unsung Artiste” winner, opened for Nigerian superstar Davido.
Daddy Lumba, born September 29, 1964, in Nsuta, pioneered highlife’s modern evolution and won multiple Ghana Music Awards. His legacy spans decades, with hits resonating globally.
Gambo’s tribute underscored the late legend’s enduring cultural impact during a high-profile U.S. tour, which included recent stops at Los Angeles’ KIA Forum Arena. The moment united audiences in celebrating a genre-defining artist whose work transcended borders.
