German Chancellor Friedrich Merz vowed to increase pressure on Moscow in a conversation with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky on Friday.

German Chancellor Friedrich Merz vowed to increase pressure on Moscow in a conversation with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky on Friday.

“The chancellor promised [Zelensky] that Germany will continue its support and expand cooperation in the defence industry,” said government spokesman Stefan Kornelius.

Germany will also increase pressure on Moscow together with its Western partners, Kornelius added.

Zelensky thanked Merz for his support in a post on X: “Today, Russia carried out a terrorist strike on Ukraine, targeting our energy infrastructure, using hundreds of drones and dozens of missiles.”

“Germany has made a significant contribution to protecting the lives of our people,” he continued.

“We greatly value Germany’s solidarity and support,” the Ukrainian president wrote.
