The number of people emigrating from Germany to the United States dropped by 18% in the first nine months of the year to the lowest level since the coronavirus-hit year of 2021, official figures showed on Monday.

From January to September, 17,100 departures were recorded, compared with 20,800 in the same period last year, the Federal Statistical Office said.

Meanwhile, the number of people moving to Germany from the US rose 3.4% to just over 19,300.

“This means that for the first time since 2021, more people moved from the US to Germany than vice versa,” the office said.

According to the data, fewer US tourists have visited Germany since the beginning of the year, when US President Donald Trump returned to the White House for his second term.

From January to August, around 1.96 million arrivals were recorded, 3.2% fewer than the 2.02 million who visited Germany from the US in the same period last year.

The number of people visiting the US from Germany also dropped 1.3% between January and September. “During the same period, the number of passengers travelling to other non-European destinations rose by 4.3%,” the statisticians noted.
