Kumasi Asante Kotoko’s opening game in the 2025 GHALCA Top 4 turned sour after a bizarre own goal from defender Henry Ansu handed Bibiani Gold Stars a 2-1 victory.

The 26-year-old centre-half endured a nightmare moment midway through the second half when a routine back pass turned into a disaster.

Henry Ansu scores bizarre own goal in Kotoko’s defeat

In a video circulating on social media, Ansu collected a pass from a teammate on the right flank.

Looking to recycle possession, he rolled the ball back toward goalkeeper Mohammed Camara. Unfortunately for him, Camara was caught out of position.

The ball kept rolling, and despite the goalkeeper’s desperate attempt to scramble back, it found its way into the net.

Head coach Abdul Karim Zito was left visibly stunned on the sidelines, while Gold Stars players celebrated the unexpected gift.

How Henry Ansu’s own goal contributed to Kotoko’s defeat

Before the own goal stole the spotlight, Kotoko had actually made a strong start.

In the 16th minute, Albert Amoah expertly controlled a cross-field delivery before calmly slotting past Emmanuel Kobi to give the Porcupine Warriors the lead.

Kotoko dictated play afterwards, but a lapse at the back allowed Samuel Atta Kumi to slip through.

Captain Ndongani Samba Oneil brought him down, leaving the referee with no option but to award a penalty.

Kumi stepped up and tucked it away to level the score before halftime.

The second half saw Kotoko pushing forward, with Amoah once again going close but firing wide from a promising position.

That miss proved costly, as moments later, Ansu’s ill-fated back pass rolled into his own net, gifting Gold Stars the lead.

Despite mounting late pressure, Kotoko could not find an equaliser. Gold Stars held their ground and walked away with all three points.

Kotoko will now have to regroup quickly as they prepare to face Heart of Lions on Friday night.

Gold Stars, on the other hand, will look to build momentum when they clash with Hearts of Oak in their next fixture.
