Emerging African game artists will gather in Ghana this September for PLAYFUL OBSCURA, a groundbreaking residency exploring the fusion of art and interactive technology.
The Goethe-Institut, A MAZE., and Node Eight Foundation announced the two-week program today, inviting creators across the continent to develop experimental projects at the intersection of gaming and artistic expression.
Running from September 15–27 in Ho, the residency supports mid-career and emerging talents working with playful media, arthouse games, or interactive installations.
Participants receive workspace, accommodation, a stipend, production funds, and opportunities for local cultural exchange. Node Eight’s Executive Director Brian Dzansi emphasized its role in “spotlighting Africa’s creative technology talent while building ecosystems for innovation.”
This initiative anchors the broader GamesConnect AFRICA movement a Goethe-Institut project empowering African studios through global market access and mentorship.
Safurat Balogun of Goethe-Institut Abidjan noted the residency’s alignment with their mission to amplify voices “reimagining how we engage with art through games.”
The program aims to strengthen Africa’s presence in international game art circles, coinciding with major events like Lagos Games Week and Africa Games Week.
Applications are open to Africa-based artists until August 25, 2025.
