South Dayi MP Rockson Nelson-Dafeamekpor has publicly condemned suspended Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo for allegedly “abusing court processes” through her legal actions challenging ongoing removal proceedings.

Speaking on TV3’s KeyPoints on July 12, the legislator asserted: “The suspended Chief Justice is constantly berating our Judges. She has become too petty,” referencing Torkornoo’s July 4 lawsuit filed at the ECOWAS Community Court in Abuja.

The ECOWAS suit, confirmed by Deputy Attorney General Dr. Justice Srem-Sai, challenges Torkornoo’s April 2025 suspension under Article 146(6) of Ghana’s Constitution. It claims human rights violations including invasive body searches, confiscation of electronic devices, and denial of family access during hearings before the Pwamang Committee investigating misconduct allegations.

Torkornoo contends her suspension constitutes removal without due process, violating her constitutional rights. This international filing duplicates arguments currently before Ghana’s Supreme Court and High Court, prompting Dafeamekpor’s criticism of forum-shopping tactics.

The judicial crisis stems from three petitions that established prima facie grounds for investigation. President Mahama suspended Torkornoo after Council of State consultation, appointing a five-member committee chaired by Supreme Court Justice Gabriel Pwamang. The ECOWAS Court has not yet scheduled hearings, while domestic proceedings continue.
