Accra Regional Police Command has pledged swift investigations and prosecutions following violent incidents during the July 11 Ablekuma North parliamentary rerun.
In a July 13 statement, authorities confirmed assaults and disorderly conduct at polling stations disrupted voting, though officers reportedly contained situations promptly.
“The Regional Command is taking steps to identify perpetrators,” the announcement stated. “Anyone engaged in violence, intimidation, or breach of peace will face arrest and due process.”
Police urged public cooperation in identifying suspects, referencing documented attacks including assaults on a GHOne TV journalist and former NPP official Hawa Koomson.
This response follows Vice President Naana Opoku-Agyemang’s condemnation of the violence and NPP communicator Patrick Awuku’s criticism of security lapses. The incidents occurred despite deployment of 100 officers per polling station, raising questions about election security protocols.
The police commitment comes amid escalating political tensions, with NDC MP Sam George simultaneously demanding resolution of his 2019 election-related assault case. No timeline has been provided for completing the Ablekuma North investigations.
