Taking to his TikTok account, the young man with the username @taadibanyinbagh issued a strong warning and advice to Ghanaians about the exploitative practices of rental/housing agents.

In the trending video, he detailed two primary issues he had personally encountered with many housing agents. According to him, agents in Ghana are charging exorbitant viewing fees from their customers.

Ghanaian man calls out housing agents

He cited an instance in which an agent collected a non-refundable viewing fee of GH₵200 just to see an apartment. He also claimed that the agent would have used a similar strategy to others with the same apartment.

In his words:

“This fee, he calls it a “viewing fee,” and it’s 200 Cedis. And you see, he’s not just collecting this money from you. He shows the same room to multiple people and collects viewing fees from all of them on the same day.”

The second issue is that housing agents are dishonestly quoting a higher rent to tenants or home searchers than what the landlord is actually asking for. He gives an example where an agent inflated a GH₵450 rent to GH₵650, intending to pocket the GH₵200 difference.

Speaking further, he criticised Ghana’s Rent Control Department for being ineffective and failing to protect citizens from these practices. He concludes by urging the public to be extremely cautious and directly appeals to the Minister of Works and Housing to intervene and regulate the rental market.
