The Bulk Oil Storage and Transportation Company (BOST) has begun installing solar power systems at its major fuel depots, targeting significant operational savings and alignment with Ghana’s national Energy Transition Framework.

The initiative, led by BOST’s newly formed Green Transition and Alternative Fuels Department, will replace diesel generators at Buipe, Kumasi, and Tema depots with solar arrays powering critical operations like pumps and monitoring systems.

Managing Director Afetsi Awoonor cited diesel prices exceeding GH¢12 per litre as a key driver, calling solar adoption “smart economics.” Beyond slashing energy costs, the shift supports Ghana’s goal of 10% emissions reduction by 2030 and positions BOST to leverage carbon credit markets. “Each solar depot reinforces our role in Ghana’s sustainable energy future,” Awoonor stated, framing the move as essential for long-term resilience.

The rollout coincides with President Mahama’s establishment of the Ministry of Green Transition, headed by John Abdulai Jinapor, which is coordinating cross-sector climate efforts. While technical challenges like maintenance expertise remain, BOST emphasized the transition as strategic adaptation: “It’s about staying relevant in a world moving toward cleaner energy.”
