Nana Konadu Agyemang-Rawlings was one of Ghana’s most prominent political figures and women’s rights advocates. Born on November 17, 1948, in Cape Coast, she became First Lady when her husband, Jerry John Rawlings, rose to power as a military leader and then as a democratically elected president. As First Lady from 1981 to 2001, Nana Konadu made her mark through her work with the 31st December Women’s Movement, which she founded to promote women’s empowerment, education, and child welfare across Ghana. Her efforts helped shape policies around gender equality and community development at a time when women’s voices were rarely heard in politics.

Married to Jerry Rawlings in 1977, the couple had four children, including Dr. Zanetor Agyeman-Rawlings, who is currently the Member of Parliament for Klottey Korle. Nana Konadu stood by her husband throughout his public life, from his days as a young Air Force officer to his time as Ghana’s longest-serving leader.  Her husband, Jerry John Rawlings, passed away in November 2020, an event that deeply saddened the nation.
