A 48-year-old herdsman, identified only as Haruna, has been shot dead by unknown gunmen at Sori Number Three, a suburb of the West Gonja Municipality in the Savannah Region.

The incident, which occurred around 2 a.m. on Monday, August 18, happened shortly after Haruna had finished trading cattle at the Buipe livestock market.

Community sources told Myjoyonline that the assailants, believed to have been monitoring his movements, emerged from a nearby bush and demanded the day’s proceeds.

When Haruna resisted, they opened fire, killing him instantly before fleeing with an undisclosed amount of money.

Haruna, who owned six kraals in Damongo, was known for his weekly cattle trade every Monday along the same route.

Residents suspect the attackers had mounted surveillance ahead of the assault.

The Savannah Regional Police Command confirmed the incident and said officers have visited the scene and conveyed the body to St. Anne’s Catholic Hospital in Damongo for further investigation.

News of the killing has sparked tension in the area, with fellow herdsmen and relatives gathering at the hospital to demand the immediate release of his body for burial.
