The Western Regional Coordinating Council, in collaboration with the House of Chiefs, held a vigil on Tuesday, August 12, 2025, for the eight individuals who died in the helicopter crash in Adansi Obuasi, Ashanti Region.

The wake brought together security services, several residents of Sekondi-Takoradi, and others from nearby districts who participated in the vigil and candle procession.

The Western Regional Minister, Joseph Nelson, in his heartfelt tribute to the eight gallant men, urged Ghanaians to honour the victims’ services and sacrifices.

He emphasised that the legacy of the eight gallants should inspire citizens to serve with greater dedication and strive for excellence.

“Remember our compatriots. We mourn them, but beyond that, we cherish the services they rendered to the country. Let it inspire us to serve and serve better. Let’s learn from their services to this nation. Be guided, be strengthened, and encouraged to do our best in whatever capacity we find ourselves,” he said.

Air Commodore Eric Yirenkyi, Garrison Commander and Takoradi Air Force Commander, described the fallen as not only skilled aviators but also dedicated public servants whose absence will be deeply felt.

Ghanaians urged to turn grief into unity

The Paramount Chief of Wassa Amenfi Traditional Area, Tetrete Okuamoah Sekyim II, urged Ghanaians to turn grief into unity and progress.

He also called on citizens to protect the land and cherish their people, while urging the government to honour the fallen heroes, with the Western Regional House of Chiefs‘ full support.

“Let this loss be more than a moment of grief. It is not a turning point. Each of us, in our own way, must rise to protect our land. Uplift our people and guard the unity that makes us strong. In doing so, we will advance Ghana with the same courage that it has shown. Keep their light burning and ensure their sacrifice was not in vain,” he advised.

The state funeral for the remaining six victims of the Wednesday helicopter crash is scheduled to take place on Friday, August 15, 2025, at Black Star Square in Accra.

The rite is expected to bring together dignitaries, family members, friends, and citizens from all walks of life to pay their final respects.

Helicopter crash kills eight Ghanaians

Earlier, YEN.com.gh reported that the tragic helicopter crash, which occurred on August 6, 2025, resulted in the deaths of Ghana’s Defence Minister, Dr Edward Omane Boamah, and the Minister of Environment, Science and Technology, Ibrahim Murtala Mohammed.

Deputy National Security Coordinator Limuna Muniru, former Ashanti Regional Minister Dr Samuel Sarpong, and former NDC parliamentary candidate for Obuasi East, Samuel Aboagye, also lost their lives in the crash.

The crew members who died were Squadron Leader Peter Bafemi Anala, Flying Officer Manin Twum-Ampadu, and Sergeant Ernest Addo Mensah.
