Hollywood has been plunged into mourning following the death of legendary actress Diane Keaton, who passed away on Saturday, October 11, 2025, at the age of 79 in California.

The Los Angeles Fire Department (LAFD) confirmed that they responded to Keaton’s home at 8:08 a.m. local time and transported a 79-year-old woman to a nearby hospital, where she was later pronounced dead.

Beloved for her timeless charm, wit, and trailblazing individuality, Keaton leaves behind a cinematic legacy spanning more than five decades. She rose to international fame in the 1970s with her role as Kay Adams in The Godfather films, and went on to win the Academy Award for Best Actress for her unforgettable performance in Woody Allen’s Annie Hall (1977).

Her illustrious film career included iconic titles such as The First Wives Club, Something’s Gotta Give, Baby Boom, Father of the Bride, and the Book Club series. She was also a frequent collaborator with filmmaker Nancy Meyers and, in 2021, appeared in Justin Bieber’s music video for “Ghost.”

Born Diane Hall in Los Angeles in 1946, Keaton was the eldest of four children. Her father was a civil engineer, while her mother, a homemaker with artistic aspirations, inspired Keaton’s creative spirit. “Secretly, in her heart of hearts, she probably wanted to be an entertainer of some kind,” Keaton told People in 2004. “She sang. She played the piano. She was beautiful. She was my advocate.”

Adopting her mother’s maiden name, Keaton, she entered Hollywood determined to stand apart—and she did. Known for her distinctive style, independence, and refusal to conform to Hollywood’s expectations, Keaton never married and often spoke openly about her unconventional path.

“Today I was thinking, I’m the only one in my generation of actresses who has been a single woman all her life,” she told People in 2019. “I’m really glad I didn’t get married. I’m an oddball.”

Throughout her life, she was romantically linked to some of Hollywood’s biggest names, including Woody Allen, Al Pacino, and Warren Beatty, but said she found her true fulfillment in motherhood.

Keaton adopted two children — Dexter in 1996 and Duke in 2001. “Motherhood was not an urge I couldn’t resist; it was more like a thought I’d been thinking for a very long time. So I plunged in,” she shared in a 2008 interview with Ladies’ Home Journal.

Beyond acting, Keaton was a photographer, author, fashion icon, and beloved presence on social media, where she frequently shared reflections on her career, family, and the people who inspired her.

Diane Keaton is survived by her two children, Dexter and Duke Keaton.

The world will remember her as a fearless performer, a trailblazing woman, and an eternal embodiment of style, humor, and heart.
