Ghanaian musician and songwriter, Ofori Amponsah, has stated that he would never stand anywhere to speak ill of his mentor and father figure in the music industry, the late Highlife legend, Daddy Lumba.
Speaking in a recent interview on Hitz FM with Doreen Avio and Kwame Dadzie, the Otoolege hitmaker described Lumba as his teacher, mentor, father, and friend. He revealed that the celebrated musician was the first person to tell him, “You are a star,” and supported him at a time when few believed in his craft.
Ofori Amponsah explained that having spent several years closely working and living with Daddy Lumba, he came to deeply understand his personality, values, and the kind of person he was behind the fame. He said those who never had that level of relationship with the late musician might easily misunderstand him.
The singer further added that he is often surprised by the negative remarks made about Lumba, noting that the late musician’s exceptional talent naturally attracted both admiration and envy.
“I sometimes marvel or laugh when I hear people say all sorts of things about him, especially knowing how the man really is after working with him for about seven to eight years before going solo.
“The gifting of Daddy Lumba was too much, and every great gift comes with consequences because people will try to backbite you and pull you down because of it. But as for me, I recognized that gift in him and said in my heart that I will never sit anywhere—whether in my room or anywhere else—to speak ill of him,” he said, describing Lumba as “extraordinary.”
Ofori Amponsah went on to recount how the late Highlife legend supported him financially while he was still in school, describing him as a man with a big heart who always wanted others around him to succeed. He expressed deep gratitude for Lumba’s generosity and belief in his talent, emphasizing that his success story could never be told without mentioning the late icon.
