In an emotional social media post, Inter Miami midfielder Sergio Busquets confirmed that he will retire from professional football after the MLS playoffs.

The 37-year-old has played 69 league matches for the Herons, with his contract set to expire in December of this year.

According to Transfermarkt, Busquets has had a remarkable career, making 722 appearances for FC Barcelona, winning nine La Liga titles and three UEFA Champions League trophies.

On the international stage with Spain, he earned 143 caps and lifted the 2010 FIFA World Cup in South Africa.

In terms of Sergio Busquets’ all-time career appearances for both club and country, he has appeared in 970 senior matches so far, as cited by Wikipedia records.

Since joining Inter Miami, the respected footballer has already added two major honours to his trophy cabinet: the 2023 Leagues Cup and the 2024 Supporters’ Shield.

In his Thursday announcement, Busquets explained that his decision to retire stems from a sense of fulfillment and gratitude for his career. He also pointed out that his journey has been incredible, reflecting on nearly two decades of living his dream and cherishing every moment on the pitch.

In addition, Busquets emphasised that he leaves the game happy, satisfied, and deeply appreciative of the support he has received throughout his career.

“My career has been an amazing journey, and I feel the time has come to say goodbye to professional football. Nearly 20 years of living the dream I always hoped for have been unforgettable, and these will be my final months on the pitch.”

Looking ahead to the final stretch of the season and with five regular-season games remaining, Inter Miami has already secured a playoff spot.

The team of Lionel Messi now aims for a direct berth and could move higher from their current third-place position, sitting just five points behind Eastern Conference leaders Philadelphia Union with two games in hand.
