- Liverpool’s season hits early trouble with a key injury ruling out a first-team regular for at least three weeks
- The reigning Premier League champions travel to Newcastle United in one of their toughest fixtures of the season without Jeremie Frimpong
- Arne Slot has four potential options to fill in for the injured right-back, with his choices extending beyond the defensive line
Liverpool right-back Jeremie Frimpong has been sidelined with a hamstring injury and won’t return until after next month’s international break, reducing Arne Slot’s options ahead of Monday’s clash with Newcastle United at St James’ Park.
Frimpong, 24, who arrived from Bayer Leverkusen this summer, made his Premier League debut in last Friday’s 4–2 win over Bournemouth. He was subbed off in the second half due to what the medical staff identified as a hamstring issue.

According to Slot, the decision to take Frimpong off wasn’t related to his performance. The medical staff detected a hamstring issue, and their judgment proved correct. The Reds’ gaffer believes had he stayed on, the injury could have worsened.
In the meantime, according to Metro Sport, the team expects him to return after the international break.
According to Sports Illustrated, the next FIFA international window dedicated to World Cup qualifiers and friendlies is scheduled for September 1–9, 2025. This means Frimpong should be out for close to three weeks.
Liverpool’s right-back concerns ahead of Newcastle
Frimpong’s absence puts the Premier League champions in a tight spot for the upcoming fixtures against Newcastle and Arsenal. Conor Bradley, another right-back option, is also recovering from a muscle injury and hasn’t featured yet this season.
Slot revealed that Bradley had only just returned to light training and the technicl team would monitor his progress before making a final verdict on his availability for the Newcastle United clash on August 25.
Joe Gomez, who came on for Frimpong against Bournemouth, is also a potential stand-in — but fitness remains an issue. He’s been dealing with lingering Achilles discomfort and hasn’t been able to train consistently.
“Joe is an option, but 20 minutes last weekend was a lot after being out for so long. He’s not had a full training stretch yet. We’ll have to wait and see,” Slot said.
If Bradley and Gomez aren’t ready, Slot hinted that Wataru Endo and even Dominik Szoboszlai could temporarily fill in at right-back, both having some prior experience in that role.
Semenyo makes history with Liverpool brace
YEN.com.gh earlier reported on the new milestone Ghana international striker Antoine Semenyo has achieved following his two goals against Liverpool on opening day of the new Premier League season.
Bournemouth lost 4-2 at Anfield, in a game that saw both good and bad: six thriling goals and a reported racris abuse against Ghanaian attacker Semenyo. Liverpool had honoured Diogo Jota in a grand style before kickoff but once the action started, it was Semenyo’s breathtaking double and the unfortunate incident that dominated the headlines.
