- Kennedy Ohene Agyapong has criticised Dr Mahamudu Bawumia’s “Aka 9 pɛ” mantra, questioning its logic
- Agyapong argued that Bawumia’s claim of needing only 9 per cent to win in 2028 would prolong the NPP’s time in opposition
- He challenged Bawumia to consider how long it would take to close a 1.7m vote deficit, similar to Mahama’s eight-year recovery after the 2016 loss
A flagbearer hopeful of the New Patriotic Party, Kennedy Ohene Agyapong, has slammed his main opponent, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, questioning the logic behind his “Aka 9 pɛ” mantra ahead of the presidential primary slated for January 31, 2026.
While submitting his nomination forms on Thursday, August 28, 2025, Dr Bawumia reminded NPP delegates that in the 2024 election, where he was the party’s presidential candidate, he polled 41 per cent.

He argued that having already secured 41 per cent in the bag, he would only need 9 per cent in the forthcoming presidential elections in 2028 to wrestle power back for the NPP.
However, responding to this during an engagement with party delegates in the Western North Region, Kennedy Agyapong, a former MP for Assin Central, said the Aka 9 pɛ logic, promoted by Dr Bawumia’s camp, means that the NPP will remain in opposition for many more years.
He said if the current president, John Dramani Mahama, took eight years to close a deficit of eight million votes after losing the 2016 election to win the December 7, 2024 polls, then it leaves one to wonder how long it will take the NPP to return to power.
“You lost the national elections with a deficit of 1.7 million votes. When are you going to close this gap? I heard someone (Dr Bawumia) saying Aka 9 pɛ. Okay, if that’s the case, Mahama lost with a vote deficit of one million in 2016. It took him eight years to bounce back. If you have lost by 1.7 million, then this: If one million is equal to eight years, then 1.7 million is equal to X. So, find X,” he tasked Dr Bawumia.

“If 1 million votes =8years then how many years will 1.7 million vote =? Reason: it’s a direct proportion. Years=8×1.7m/1m=8×1.7 =13.6years (≈ 13 years and 7.2 months.)”

“And it’s Bawumia who let Mahama consolidated his 1 million votes deficit, He made Mahama looked like a saint.”
@David vagan also commented:
“If in 2008 Akuffo Addo needed 0.24% of the votes to win but took 8 years to get that How many years will it take Dr Bawumia who needs 9% to win 9/0.24 x 8 =300 Dr Bawumia will need 300 years to win.”
