Ghanaian politician Kennedy Agyapong has called for a shift toward self-reliant economic strategies, asserting that Ghana possesses sufficient resources to thrive without International Monetary Fund (IMF) support.

Citing nations like Thailand, Brazil, and Kenya—which built robust agricultural value chains—he emphasized Ghana’s potential to leverage local maize for ethanol production. “Why run to the IMF when the solution is right here? We lack basic pragmatism,” Agyapong stated.

He revealed facing political and economic sabotage from within his own New Patriotic Party (NPP), alleging members blocked contracts due to fears over his growing influence. “They said, ‘Don’t give Kennedy Agyapong contracts; he’ll become too powerful.’ From 2021 to 2024, I was frozen out. Only in August 2024 did I secure a contract again,” he disclosed. Despite this, Agyapong reaffirmed his commitment to the NPP, recalling decades of personal sacrifices to sustain the party since the 1990s.

Agyapong stressed that Ghana must prioritize actionable results over theoretical governance. “We don’t need more theorists. We need doers who know what to do with what we have,” he argued, urging policies that harness domestic assets to drive sustainable growth.
