Former Fisheries Minister Mavis Hawa Koomson has accused National Democratic Congress (NDC) supporters of physically assaulting her during the July 11 Ablekuma North parliamentary rerun.

In a social media statement, the ex-Awutu Senya East MP claimed “NDC machomen” attacked her while she observed voting, resulting in the theft of her mobile phone.

Koomson urged the public to disregard communications from her missing device, stating: “Any calls, messages, or posts from my number after the incident are unauthorized.” Video footage circulating online appears to show her being pushed to the ground at St. Peter’s Society Methodist Church polling station, with witnesses reporting assailants overpowering security personnel.

Ghana Police Service officials confirmed intervening but disputed the assault characterization, noting in a statement: “Our preliminary assessment shows no evidence of targeted violence against the former Minister.” The incident amplifies scrutiny of electoral security lapses following earlier criticism of police preparedness during the rerun.

Opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) leaders have condemned the alleged attack, while NDC officials dismissed the claims as “unsubstantiated theatrics.” The altercation occurred amid heightened tensions after the ruling NDC flipped the historically NPP-held constituency.
