Inside Ricky Hatton’s extraordinary boxing career

Ricky Hatton’s professional career ran from 1997 until 2012, during which he secured multiple world titles.

One of his most defining victory came in 2005 when he stunned the boxing world by defeating Kostya Tszyu – then regarded as one of the sport’s finest pound-for-pound fighters – to capture the IBF and The Ring junior welterweight championships.

Later that year, on 26 November, Hatton added the WBA light-welterweight belt after overcoming Carlos Maussa, an achievement that saw him named Ring Magazine’s Fighter of the Year for 2005.

In May 2006, he stepped up to welterweight and edged out Luis Collazo to claim the WBA crown. He soon dropped back down to light-welterweight, defeating Juan Urango in Las Vegas on 20 January 2007 to unify the IBF and IBO titles via a clear unanimous decision.

Hatton’s rise as one of Britain’s most popular fighters earned him mega-fights against Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Manny Pacquiao, though he was beaten on both occasions. He never quite scaled the same heights again and retired in 2012.

Post-retirement, Hatton struggled with alcoholism and depression but eventually managed to rebuild his life, including taking part in an exhibition bout with Mexican legend Marco Antonio Barrera in 2022.

On 6 July 2025, Hatton declared he was coming out of retirement at the age of 46, with a bout set in Dubai against fellow 46-year-old Eisa Al Dah. It was widely reported that his decision to fight again was partly inspired by Manchester icons Oasis, who had recently staged their long-awaited reunion tour.
