Ghanaian actress Lydia Forson has spoken out against the haircut policies enforced in senior high schools, after a video of a newly enrolled Yaa Asantewaa Girls’ SHS student in tears over a forced haircut gained online attention.
Taking to X, Lydia described the rule as “archaic,” questioning why it still exists in modern education. She dismissed the common defenses, that short hair helps girls focus or prevents distraction as outdated arguments that fail to address the real issues. “Schools that allow braids, puffs, locs and all, shockingly, still produce excellent students. Because the issue was never hair,” she wrote.
The actress further linked the policy to broader issues of self-esteem among women, explaining how such practices shape negative perceptions of natural hair from childhood. She called for a review of the rules, advocating for students to be allowed to keep neat, natural hairstyles while being taught proper hair care as part of hygiene.
