Medical staff attended to the Spanish coach immediately after the crash to stabilise his condition.
Reports later confirmed he had suffered a clavicle fracture, a painful injury often caused by a heavy fall onto the shoulder or an outstretched arm.
In Enrique’s case, the damage was significant enough to require surgery, with the bone believed to have shifted out of alignment.
Enrique, a passionate cyclist, was frequently seen riding his bike during the 2022 World Cup in Qatar while managing Spain, before La Roja’s early exit from the tournament.
Not long after, he took on the grueling Absa Cape Epic in South Africa, completing nearly 700 kilometres over eight days of challenging terrain.
PSG release statement after Luis Enrique was hospitalised
In a statement released on Friday evening, PSG wrote:
‘Following a cycling accident on Friday, Paris Saint-Germain head coach Luis Enrique was treated by the emergency services and will undergo surgery for a fractured collarbone.
‘The club expresses its full support and wishes him a swift recovery. Further updates will be shared in due course.’
Enrique’s injury comes just over a week before PSG return to action after the international break.
The French champions face Lens in Ligue 1 on September 14, followed by their Champions League title defence opener against Atalanta three days later.
It remains uncertain whether Enrique will be fit to lead the team from the touchline.
Recovery from a fractured collarbone usually takes six to eight weeks, with patients often required to wear a sling before beginning rehabilitation.
Enrique, who took charge at PSG in the summer of 2023, has overseen a period of dominance in France, winning back-to-back Ligue 1 titles and French Cups.
Most notably, he guided PSG to their first-ever Champions League triumph last season, a resounding 5-0 victory over Inter Milan in the Munich final.
Earlier this summer, PSG reached the final of the inaugural FIFA Club World Cup, where they fell short against Chelsea.
For Enrique, however, the previous Champions League triumph carried far deeper meaning.
During the final in Munich, PSG supporters unveiled a giant tifo at the Allianz Arena in memory of his late daughter Xana, who passed away from bone cancer in 2019 at just nine years old.
She had once shared his greatest footballing joy, joining him on the pitch in Berlin in 2015 with a Barcelona flag after his Champions League victory with the Catalan giants.
