President John Mahama has initiated Phase Two of the Blekusu Coastal Protection Project, combining sea defense infrastructure with economic facilities to revitalize tidal wave-battered communities along Ghana’s eastern coast. The 2025-2029 intervention will deliver:
-
Climate Resilience: 8km of shoreline defenses (37 groins, dune restoration)
-
Economic Infrastructure: Modern fish market, cold storage, processing units, and sanitation systems
-
Transport Upgrades: Dedicated parking and lorry stations
Speaking at the July 2025 groundbreaking, Mahama emphasized the dual focus: “We’re blending environmental protection with socio-economic infrastructure to reclaim what the sea has taken.” The project by MSS Amandi Holdings Ltd. targets Blekusu, Agaveji, Salakope, Amutinu, and Adina – areas devastated by 2017 and 2021 tidal waves.
The President announced complementary initiatives, including China-funded Aflao Market and the proposed WAKA Project (Adina-Aflao coastal works), while cautioning against illegal sand mining.
