Tensions surrounding Malawi’s 2025 General Elections escalated on Friday after eight data clerks were arrested on allegations of manipulating election figures at the Nkhoma Constituency Tally Centre in Lilongwe.
The Malawi Police Service (MPS) confirmed the arrests in a statement dated September 19, stating that the suspects were employed to handle data entry during the polls. Authorities linked the detentions to an ongoing probe into an attempted suicide involving Clement Chikanhka, the Malawi Electoral Commission’s (MEC) returning officer for Lilongwe Nkhoma Constituency.
“Their arrest follows investigations MPS was conducting on an attempted suicide case involving Mr. Clement Chikanhka,” the statement said. While police did not disclose how Chikanhka’s case is connected to the alleged manipulation, the incident has fueled speculation about possible irregularities in the electoral process.
With official results yet to be announced, the arrests have heightened public anxiety. Malawi has a history of disputed election outcomes, with previous contests marred by allegations of fraud, political unrest, and legal challenges.
Police spokesperson Assistant Commissioner Peter Kalaya said the investigation extended beyond a single constituency. “The Service is also following up on a number of similar cases reported in Mangochi, Chikwawa, Blantyre, Machinga and Rumphi Districts,” he explained, urging Malawians to remain calm as inquiries continue.
Authorities have yet to reveal the methods allegedly used to tamper with data or the precise charges the eight suspects may face. Investigators say they are “working against the clock” to establish the facts.
The arrests have reignited debate over electoral integrity, with civil society groups and political observers calling for greater transparency to protect the credibility of the 2025 vote. As the nation awaits official results, many fear the unfolding scandal could further erode public trust in Malawi’s democratic institutions.
